Walking Difficulty

Difficulty walking is the common way people describe gait abnormalities. An abnormal gait is any unusual or uncontrollable change in normal walking pattern. Difficulty walking may include problems standing or moving. Difficulty walking is a common symptom caused by a brain tumor.


Neurologic and movement disorder causes of difficulty walking

Movement disorders and neurologic disorders affecting the brain or spinal cord can cause difficulty walking including:


  • ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), or Lou Gehrig’s disease
  • Brain or spinal cord infection, tumor or trauma
  • Cerebellar ataxia
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Foot drop
  • Huntington’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Muscular dystrophy

  • Peripheral neuropathy
